A Trail Birthday to Remember
Imagine waking up to a breathtaking view, the kind that makes you feel like you're on top of the world. That's exactly how my morning began at Burney Mountain, a picturesque campsite with a view of Lassen and Shasta peaks. It was a welcome change from the uneven terrain FarOut had warned us about.
The day's hike to Burney Mountain Guest Ranch was a breeze, a much-needed respite from the challenging trails we'd been navigating. Arriving early, I was thrilled to reunite with my trail friends, Posh, Flash, and Birdman, who had decided to take a well-deserved rest day.
Not wanting to miss out on the relaxation, I booked a room at the ranch and indulged in a much-needed shower and laundry day. With my chores done early, I had the luxury of time to lounge by the pool and reconnect with my trail family.
Our catch-up session was a mix of shared experiences, from the horror stories of navigating the burn scar to the lighthearted tales of our tourist adventures along the blue blazes. We then treated ourselves to a delicious buffet of fish tacos, which I transformed into a refreshing salad. The highlight of the day was a sweet surprise birthday celebration organized by my trail buddies. They even got the dining hall to sing for me!
I was torn between continuing the social festivities or prioritizing rest, but ultimately, my body's need for recovery won out. I retreated to my room, knowing that taking care of myself was the best decision. I caught up on some much-needed internet chores and scrolled through my feeds until the sun set.
This birthday on the trail was a reminder of the beauty of shared experiences and the importance of self-care. It's a delicate balance, but one that I'm learning to navigate as I hike the PCT. Until next time, happy trails!
Personally, I think these little moments of connection and celebration along the trail are what make the journey so special. It's a unique community, and I'm grateful for the memories we're creating together.
