Mike Hewson's The Opera House Table: A Fusion of History and Creativity
Mike Hewson, a Sydney-based artist and designer, has crafted a captivating collection of tables and chairs using pre-cast panels from the late 1960s, rumored to be part of the Sydney Opera House's original materials. This project showcases Hewson's unique approach to repurposing and transforming discarded materials, inviting reflection on the histories of materials, architecture, and place.
In an interview with Landscape Australia editor Emily Wong, Hewson delves into the concept behind the collection. He clarifies that the panels are not verified Sydney Opera House material but bear markings and similarities to the materials found in the Opera House's forecourt. The panels, carved with the date of their pouring, add a sense of historical context and intrigue.
The tables and chairs exude a distinct gravity, combining solemnity with retro-futuristic aesthetics. Hewson attributes this to the 1960s space race context and the current resurgence of interest in modernism. The moon-like texture of the panels' underside further enhances their otherworldly appeal, creating a post-apocalyptic future object.
Hewson's journey into furniture design began with his background in designing surreal playspaces and a fascination with collectible design. He explains that the dining table, an anchor object in the home, inspired him to work with the panels, which are almost perfectly proportioned for such a table. Hewson's approach to material usage is rooted in respecting the material's history and allowing it to guide the creative process.
The artist's use of second-hand materials is driven by the desire to give historically significant items a cherished life. He finds appeal in materials that are irregular or difficult to use, often ending up unused for extended periods. Hewson's minimal interventions aim to reveal the material's unique presence and energy, ensuring a long and appreciated life for these everyday objects.
Looking ahead, Hewson has plans to expand the collection with more tables and even a steam room using the panels. The Opera House Table exhibition is on display at Gallery Twenty Twenty until September 8, 2026, offering visitors a chance to explore the fusion of history, creativity, and design in Hewson's unique artistic vision.
